How can influenza be prevented in winter?

A flu virus enters the body through the mucus membranes of your nose, eyes, or mouth particularly during winter and spring seasons.  In order to prevent the flu it is important to keep your hands germ-free with careful hand washing and cleansing (especially before and after having a meal) because every time you touch your eyes or nose with your hands, you are possibly infecting yourself with a virus.
The best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu this season is by staying healthy. Practice good hygiene and stay away from sick people (social distancing). Get yourself a flu shot. All these precautionary measures will help keep the flu at a distance.
  • The flu vaccine is the best protection against the seasonal flu. If you get the flu vaccine, it reduces your risk of getting the flu up to 60%. Flu season usually peaks in January or February, but it can occur as late as May. Early vaccination is the most effective mode of preventing flu. The flu vaccines are available by flu shot or nasal spray. It is especially important to get the vaccine if you or someone you live with is suffering from the flu.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly as frequently as possible to avoid the possible viruses from entering in to your body.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze to block the virus from spreading in the air.
  • Washing surfaces in your house, especially ones you touch often. These include doorknobs, fridge doors and light switches.
  • Reducing close or direct contact with someone who may have the flu.
  • Stay at home and take some rest.
  • Take warm fluids.
  • Eat healthy.
